The Problem
Contact dermatitis is a red itchy rash cause by direct contact with a substance or an allergic reaction to it. The rash isn’t contagious and usually non-life-threatening, but it can be very uncomfortable.
Many substances or allergens in the beauty industry can cause such reactions, including soaps, cosmetics, fragrances, alkalines, acids, PPD or dies, developers, preservatives and list goes on.
CD is a common situation, with an estimated 5.7 million physician visits per year. All age groups are affected, with a slight female preponderance.
CD accounts for approximately 85 to 95% of all occupational skin disease in industrialized countries. A fundamental characteristic of CD is the relationship to environ-mental exposure, which can be determined by the site and shape of the skin lesion as well as thorough history.
